Secondment in University of Zielona Góra

As an early-stage researcher (ESR) in the ETOPIA project, one of the beneficial activities is the Secondment. Within the framework of the research topics in the ETOPIA project, I have planned several collaborations with my fellow ESRs and experts from universities and companies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only virtual Secondment activities were allowed before this September, when I was able to have my first on-site Secondment at the University of Zielona Góra for two weeks with the help and arrangement of Prof. Flavia Grassi and Prof. Robert Smolenski.

Through the train windows, I got the first sight of the stunning scenery near the city of Zielona Góra, meaning “Green Mountain” in English. The quiet city was surrounded by forests, small, but fully equipped with all facilities I needed. The friendly local people, even if the ones who don’t speak much English, were always glad to help when I got lost among the historic downtown streets.

Before setting off to Poland, Douglas (ESR 9), Amr (ESR 10) and I had several online meetings to discuss the equipment in the lab and develop the experiment plan so that we could devote ourselves to the lab activities as soon as possible.

During the first week, we measured the terminal impedance of two motors and compared the results with the literature. The measurement setup is shown in Figure 2.

Then, we carried out the conduct emissions measurement on a three-phase inverter for the a.c. motor drive inverter system by following the standard measurement setups. The measurement setup is shown in Figure 3.

I enjoyed a lot the wonderful stay in Poland. I would like to express my special thanks to Prof. Flavia Grassi for the initial arrangement and Prof. Robert Smolenski for his warm hospitality. I also appreciated the good cooperation among Douglas, Amr, Hermes, and Waseem during the Secondment. I am already looking forward to the next adventure!
